The Daily Duh: Thursday 5/12/05

Our day late and a dollar short feature for the day is that Pac-Man is now 25 and one day. Personally, I'm OK with that, because we're less about the gaming news and more about laughing at the gaming news, and so the fact that Slashdot takes Pac-Man's success as "proof" that people want challenging games is really what makes the story. Because we all know that the existence of one factor in a single datapoint constitutes proof. Note to Zoink - go have a talk with the science editors at /., I think they have a crowbar with your name written on it.

While we're a day late and a dollar short, here's a feature on the making of Super Mario Brothers 3. It's from the good old days, when gaming journalism wasn't just glassy-eyed fanpieces or rehashings of the same complaints, and when making-of features included hard and interesting technical details and insight into the game developers instead of being glorified promotion pieces. Also, your Paypal account has been compromised, and I need you to e-mail me your username and password so I can fix it.

A European GDC has been announced. I remember when Europe was sort of the unspoiled holy land of gaming. Bullfrog, Mollyneaux (Or however you spell his name - not like I care), the Worms franchise... Ultima, at least in Garriot's mind. The fact that GDC has festered its way over there probably signifies the end of that.

In short news, Bill Gates announces that Longhorn will have a pony in the box. Also that it will end malware. I bet one of those two features will make it in.

In not news, Sony Online Entertainment has announced that they'll be making some games for the Sony PSP. Fancy that. What these games have to do with online, I've yet to figure out.

OH NO THE E3 NEWS HAS BEGUN!. Fuck you, EA. And fuck you, THQ, for being in the same news article as EA.
